Look Of The Day: Shakedown Street Favorite

Free People

I felt like the luckiest little girl one Friday night in late September. I had a weekend that I will always remember. I flew to see my favorite person in the world and listen to some of my favorite music of all time. And did I mention it was at Red Rocks?

It was breathtaking. I danced, and smiled widely underneath the stars. It was perfect. And the go-to easy festy outfit for such a bold memory? A blouse top by Free People of course, shitty old jeans by William Rast and my favorite vintage boots. I danced like an idiot, but at least I looked kinda cute.

The rain is gonna come, Oh it surely looks like rain

LookBook: Leaf in the Breeze

Since high school, my dad has always called me a leaf in the breeze, happy and aloof. In my case now, the leaf in me floats from city to city, never long enough to settle on the ground. It’s a bit of a backhanded compliment, but whether I like it it or not- my dad is pretty much always right. You win Dad.

But why and where am I wandering? I am not sure, I don’t have any answers to my resistance to settle. New places fascinate me, new friends excite me, and the wind behind me is my favorite. If I ever do find what I’m looking for I will let you know, but in the mean time, here are my favorite nomadic inspired pieces .

Listen to Tommy with a candle burning and you will see your entire future.

I love album covers. They are beautiful, they are a first impression and better yet, they are nostalgic for me. Every album cover is a flashback; a certain party, a break-up, or a road trip. Memories come to mind not only when I listen to a track, but when I see the album cover. I am sold so quickly on that feeling.

My Favorites.

Katie: What to Wear in Morocco

0

Hi! I recently read this post on my pal Katie’s blog detailing her dilemma about what to wear in Morocco. It’s interesting when fashion meets cultural assimilation and travel, so I asked her if I could share with our readers. Being the peach she is, she obliged. Katie is an American-born living in London whom I met at Simmons and works in social media. She has great style and a huge heart. You can read her original post here.  – Renee

When I was getting ready to go to Morocco I wanted to know what other female tourists wore when they visited the country. But every blog post I found on the topic either featured someone wearing something that showed her knees and shoulders (which I didn’t feel comfortable with because I didn’t want to stand out in the Muslim country where local many women cover up!), or people in forums recommending djellabas (which I didn’t feel comfortable wearing because it’s not something I’d normally wear, and I didn’t want to feel entirely out of my element).

This is the blog post I was looking for before I went, written after I’ve returned with the knowledge of what to wear in Morocco…

From what I could tell with my research (and later verified once I was there) it’s fine for female tourists to wear shorts and vest tops – but if you do you’ll stand out like a sore thumb. So when I packed, I opted for a maxi skirt, two pairs of long-yet-lightweight trousers, several tee shirts that covered my shoulders, one kimono jacket, one long sleeve button down top and a printed scarf (square) as my Marrakech wardrobe. I also brought my leather rucksack, because I’m much more of a backpack than a handbag person.

Top: Just Female, past season | Kimono: Primark | Trousers: eBay | Shoes: Dune, past season |  Scarf: vintage | Sunglasses and Rucksack: same as above

Throughout the trip I realised that the more skin I showed, the more I felt hassled and stared at – even though I was with my husband the entire time. And while I know I didn’t get as much attention as some of the other female tourists we saw (and not even a fraction as much as the two women we saw teetering down an alley wearing stilettos and mini skirts!), the difference was enough for me to notice. For example, when I covered my forearms I found haggling while shopping went more smoothly, we didn’t get offered so many ‘directions’ for a fee, and taxi drivers didn’t follow us for as long in hopes that we’d cave and accept a ride. Covering my forearms also ‘protected’ me from the eager women offering henna in Jemaa el Fna, so I didn’t end up with any henna that I didn’t want.

During our trip we also went out to Aït Benhaddou, a fortified city along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco where Gladiator, The Mummy, and about a dozen other movies and even bits of Game of Thrones was filmed.

While we were at the edge of the Sahara (at the height of the afternoon heat) I was happy I wore a long sleeve top; not only was I protected from the sun (so I didn’t need to worry about sunburn) but I was also able to walk around without being stared at by the locals. Both of these tops are also made of cotton, so they were plenty breathable and I didn’t feel sweaty. Practical clothing for the win!

Top: same as above | Hat: Accessorize, past season | Trousers: Mango, past season | Shoes: from the souks in Marrakech

This last picture was taken once we reached Agadir, where we were staying in a resort and didn’t need to coverup. (At our resort the female staff uniform for day time consisted of short sleeve blouses and knee-length skirts; the evening uniform covered their full legs, and they requested guests wear trousers to dinner.) But with the cooler mornings and evenings (the day was spent in a two piece swimsuit by the pool), this type of outfit was ideal for me.

Of course, it was obvious that I’m not from Morocco and it was clear that I was a tourist in full Western dress, but I felt comfortable dressing this way, and I blended in enough that I didn’t receive much unwanted attention.

Have you been to Morocco? How did you dress? And what would you recommend to other tourists?

LookBook: Angelina Ballerina

I always used to put my cousin Grace to sleep by reading the tales of ever so mischievous  Angelina Ballerina. She loved hearing about Angelina’s zany adventures and I loved the illustrations, they were so feminine. The little mouse, Angelina, rocked every outfit–especially in her tutus. This got me thinking, why can’t I copy the mouse muse? I can, and that’s why I did. Here’s my favorite Angelina inspired dress by Free People, and a couple others to dance around in.

LOTD: ALL WHITE EVERYTHING.

There is nothing more classic than a monochromatic bedroom, art, or even just head-to-toe. Audrey was the first to claim this look, wearing tight black fitted pants to her ankles and a slim turtleneck. She looked beautiful and effortless- so why should it only be all black everything? As adverse as I am to wearing white, I’ve grown to love it- mostly because spilling on myself has decreased slowly over the years. My favorite piece for this look is the always crisp- white skinnies. Currently, I rotate through Jbrands, Habituals, TAG and when I skip my weekly serving of Dominos, my  William Rasts.

Oui Madame by Essie, $8.

With anything so fitted, I always suggest wearing a piece that counteracts your seperate; meaning something billowy, a tunic or even an oversized boyfriend tee. For a nice loose fit, my go-to is usually  any piece by Free People as the price point compliments my account and I’m a crazed Erin Wasson fan. So, watch out for the ketchup and layer on the whites.

Look of the Day: Farrah and Flares

Brave and oh-so beautiful, Farrah Fawcett will always remain America’s favorite Charlie’s Angel. She is mostly known for her Los Angeles vibe, feathered blonde hair and her public battle with anal cancer. Like a true Angel, Farrah publicly documented her fight with the taboo disease that eventually stole her megawatt smile, but her legacy (and her high waisted flares) live on forever. She will always remain one of the most coveted girls in fashion, so here’s to you Jill Munroe and your flares.

If you are a guy and you are wearing cargos, odds are that you are either a huge tool or you have given up on life. And for the women, it raises a lot of questions… Are cargos in? Do they make my legs look big? How do I wear them without looking like a soldier? Well- they are not back in, they do tend to add weight and they can be difficult to style. Regardless, they are forever bad ass and provide you with a safe option for carrying your  iPhone, so you don’t leave it at the bar again.  Here are some of my favorite cargo skinnys–Dani

I am a true believer that if everyone listened to their mothers, the world would be a much better place. There would be less mischief, less falling for bad boys, higher grades, and I actually would have put on that sunscreen. Damn! Why didn’t I? I will never know the answer to that question, everything moms usually say are always right. But, we all knowing breaking rules can be a little fun, so I hope in your case- you’ve had a little fun too.

The Three Little Sparrows would like to tell our sweet moms how thankful we are for being that voice of reason on the phone when we cry, for calling just to call, dropping off dinner, and for making us go to the Doctor when something is just not right. Although we are a little crazy (the good kind), we truly believe we get it from you. We are our mother’s daughters- thank you, thank you, thank you…

Meet our Moms.

Capture

The coolest thing about my mom? She doesn’t believe in stereotypes, and she led by example. My mom is a tall pretty blonde who can fix your sink, do your taxes and be a black belt all at the same time. And she doesn’t even brag about it, she just does it. – Renee

Capture

Why is my mom great? Well, let’s see- After having six kids, running six Boston marathons, my mom decided to focus on her dreams. She went to Bikram Yoga School in LA for four months, lived in New Zealand with my younger brothers and came back to open a beautiful, successful yoga studio. She is my number one fan, and whenever I am in doubt she tells me, ‘This above all, to thine own self be true.’  Dani

This is my mom, Jane Clare. She is a jet setter who spends her time between Calgary, sunny California, and most recently, Cape Verde, West Africa. She inspires me with her sense of adventure, glamor, and fearlessness as she maps out this new chapter of her life.- Jaime

A Few of My Favorite Things for Summer

What makes your summer a summer? Is it cold beers over a roaring fire, teaching your little cousin how to tie and cleat a hitch, or running into the Atlantic as quickly as possible before diving in, only to emerge from the white caps not being able to feel your face? For me, it’s all the above- and much more. I try to live life to the fullest, especially in our precious months when those spirits above grants us temperatures in the eighties. I love everything in the summer, I live for the salt in my hair and the refreshing breeze that hits you when you change direction on the water. Ah…I can feel the Fall breeze begin to make its way to New England, sigh. But before the leaves start to turn, I wanted to share a few of my favorite things for summer that come along with me for the ride.

Capture

My kicks of the century, these Hemp Rainbows have stayed with me for years now. They are cheaper than the classic rainbow, at only $38. (Color: Natural)

With

With being a total laze in the summer, I try and make myself somewhat presentable last-minute. And what usually takes about one second to hook on, is a cheap statement necklace. Similar necklaces available at Free People, Etsy or your local flea market.

Capture

Can’t go wrong with classic JBrands for a cold night on the boat. These days I prefer straight-leg, opposed to skinny- easier to roll up your pants when put your toes in.

Capture

And most importantly, to drink… Bud Light Limes all summer loooong.

Capture

Wear your sunscreen, people! This sunscreen by SunBum smells delicious, and stays on me for hours without a burn the next day. Will be wearing this all next summer too! Trust the BUM. ($9.99 per bottle)

Capture

My new favorite snack! Made by Earthling Organics, this dusty raw, organic granola is perfect for cereal, yogurt or a handful of energy at the beach.

Capture

Summer concerts at Fenway Park, a must. Another outside option for Bostonians, Blue Hills Pavilion.

Capture

I think I overdosed on gelato while living in Roma, but gave it another try after a sample appeared in front of me at Whole Foods. Talenti Gelato is AMAZING, it’s not the best for you calorically speaking- but if you are going to indulge, then try- Sea Salt Caramel. (Available at Whole Foods)

Look of the Day: Stuart Weitzman Over the Knee Boots

Over the Knee BootsWhenever I think of ‘Over the Knee’ boots, my mind takes me to the first scenes in the iconic 90s film, Pretty Woman. What sass Julia Roberts had in those shiny, shitty thigh-high boots. Even as an escort on the streets of Hollywood, her character, Vivian Ward, had the power all along. She was always confident, sexy, and had the smarts that most college grads never have. Her character had no problem with not being accepted in any social situation, and to thine own-self be true… right, ladies?

So, with my adoration of America’s sweetheart and this romantic comedy, I had to scoop up some OTK boots myself for Fall. For literally YEARS, my mouth would water at the original Stuart Weitzman Over the Knee suede boots. They were beautiful, they are beautiful, they will forever stay in style long after I am gone. The style of this classic suede boot is so simple, that it looks great with a fancy, silk cocktail dress or over white jeans in celebration of our Indian Summer. They are VERY costly though, but I am choosing to think of these as an investment… with high returns.

Here are my favorite Fall 2015 Over the Knee Boots brought to you by Dolce Vita, Free People and Ivanka Trump. The price points of these three ‘look alike’ options are a little easier on the wallet, and available flat, wedged or with a heel. And, of course the route I took with the Wedged Original Stuart Weitzman‘s in grey suede. They hit just above my knee, and give me about 2.5 inches of extra height- perfect for ultra skinny jeans, pencil skirts and leggings.

Trying Out A Hair Bow

Guys.

American Apparel Hair Bow

I am having a serious identity crisis here, there is a fuc*ing h bow in my hair.  And for those of you that do not know me personally, this is kind of a big deal- but, I am totally digging it and I think it’s giving my step a little more pride.

I bought my first official hair bow four years ago for a Halloween costume at American Apparel and haven’t even thought about it since. After unpacking a long, lost box- there she was. And I clipped it on my pony tail without hesitation. That historic day, I wore all black- black pants, black blouse with a black blazer- in hopes to ward off looking too feminine or maybe even juvenile.

Below are some of my favorite hair bows, perfect to dress up a monochromatic outfit or really just add a fun flare to your day. I’ve been styling these with on my pony tail, half-up/ half-down and below a sock bun.
